Distinguished Alumnus Stanley Engerman Passes Away

Distinguished Ph.D. alumnus (1962) Stanley Engerman passed away on May 11, 2023. Engerman was Emeritus Professor of Economics at the University of Rochester at the time of his death. Engerman was best known for his volume Time on the Cross (1974), coauthored with Robert Fogel, which changed the path of scholarship on the history of slavery in the U.S. by proposing a new economic interpretation of that institution. That volume was also notable for introducing to the field a more thoroughly quantitative approach to economic history, which has had reverberations ever since. In addition to that volume, Professor Engerman published more than 100 articles and authored, coauthored, or edited 16 scholarly volumes on economic history and related topics.
