Dr. John S. Chipman, a 1951 Ph.D. of the Economics Department, passed away at age 96 in 2022. John Chipman was a major scholar whose research has extended to econometric theory, trade theory, and economic theory. His Ph.D. thesis was supervised by Fritz Machlup and he spent most of his career at University of Minnesota.

He received multiple honorific appointments including being an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences in 1993 and American Philosophical Society in 2000; and having an endowed graduate fellowship established in his name in 2007. John is survived by his wife Margaret and his family.
