Thomas Drechsel is a macroeconomist and Associate Research Professor in the Economics Department of Johns Hopkins University. He is a member of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and serves as Associate Editor at the Journal of Monetary Economics. He received his PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2019.
Before joining Johns Hopkins University, Drechsel was Assistant Professor in the Economic Department of the University of Maryland, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 2026.
Drechsel’s research focuses on monetary policy, the interaction of credit markets and the macroeconomy, the role of commodities for emerging market economies, as well as real-time monitoring of macroeconomic activity. His work has been published in leading journals, such as the Review of Economic Studies, the American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, and the Journal of Monetary Economics. Drechsel’s paper “Earnings-Based Borrowing Constraints and Macroeconomic Fluctuations” was recognized with the AEJ:Macro Best Paper Award in 2025. His research has been covered by numerous news outlets, including The Financial Times, The Economist and The New York Times.
As a visiting scholar, Drechsel has worked with several central banks and policy institutions, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis, the Bank for International Settlements, and the International Monetary Fund.
