Requirements for Admission
The department's admission requirements are flexible. The admission of each applicant is by the department as a whole and rests upon his/her academic record (especially economics and mathematics courses), recommendations of scholars and instructors, GRE test scores, and other pertinent information including the match between the research interests of the applicant and the faculty. To apply for admission, an applicant must submit an official transcript of all academic work beyond secondary school and two letters of recommendation. Letters should come from individuals who can comment on your scholarly skills. All applicants must submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination. Foreign applicants must also satisfy the department that they are fluent in English by taking the TOEFL. The department requires TOEFL with a minimum score of 600 (paper based) or 250 (computer based) and for the IELTS a bandscore of 7.
Students should have a knowledge of economic theory, statistics, and mathematics including differential and integral calculus and linear algebra. Almost all of our students enter with at least two semesters of calculus and linear algebra. Other mathematics courses that are recommended include a third semester of calculus, differential equations, probability, and real analysis.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit all materials - academic transcripts, and letters of recommendation - together in one envelope. This results in a more efficient processing of your application.
