My research program focuses on collusion and cartels, with the objectives of understanding observed collusive practices, developing observable markers of collusion, and designing competition policy to detect and deter collusion. Recent theoretical work has shown how a common set of observed cartel practices in intermediate goods markets can be explained as a device to monitor compliance. My research on collusive pricing when a cartel is concerned with customer detection has generated empirically valid cartel pricing dynamics, while that on corporate leniency programs has identified key features of an optimal program. This research is on the interface of theory and practice and has been presented before the competition authorities of Chile, EU, Japan, South Africa, U.S., and other countries

180.215 Game Theory and the Social Sciences:
Game theory is one of the few mathematical tools developed for the purpose of understanding social phenomena. This course provides an introduction to game theory with an emphasis on applications, in economics, political science, business, military science, history, biology, theology and recreation. The required mathematical background is minimal - high school algebra is sufficient. Prerequisites: A sincere intent to attend class on a regular basis and the ability to engage in a little mathematics without having an anxiety attack.
Course syllabus180.671 Industrial Organization:
This course explores firm and industry behavior with an emphasis on markets characterized by imperfect competition. The central issues addressed concern the determinants of the intensity of competition, entry and exit, industry dynamics, and market dominance.
